| Engineering & Construction Academy
Our articulated course of study provides academic rigor, relevance to the Building Trades and Construction Industry, and provides relationships across the curriculum. As an entry-level workforce experience, Academy students concurrently enrolled at the junior college are eligible for construction internships. The Wood Products and Cabinetry Career path provides the opportunity for student to begin their career in the Building Trades and Construction industry after graduating from high school. The Mechanical Construction Career path provides students the opportunity to enter a Pre-apprenticeship Program or continue their education at the junior college level. The Residential and Commercial Construction Career path provides A-G rigorous college-prep coursework preparing our Academy students for entrance into the UC/CSU system.
In addition the Three Pathways, the Engineering and Construction Academy will offer certifications. Through the partnerships developed with our Advisory Committee, we provide our students with 10 hours of training in our core “Introduction to Construction and Engineering” course from a U.S. Department of Labor Construction Outreach Trainer in order for them to earn an OSHA Certified Safety Card. Upon graduation, all Academy students will receive industry-validated certificates of completion for the CTE Career Path completed. Additionally in our survey course, all academy students will receive instruction certified by the Department of Motor Vehicles to prepare them for a learners permit, to make our students employable, and to make them eligible for internships while enrolled in the Academy. Our Advisory Committee has also arranged for scholarships for the “behind the wheel” portion of Driver’s Training to students who have no D’s or F’s and are earning a “B” average or better in Academy courses.
The new state-of-the-art Academy building consists of three high-bay construction workshops to teach the three Career Paths. Our new facility is designed to feature the large variety of different aspects of engineering and architectural design. We use the latest in environmentally friendly building techniques and Green Construction. With our new high-bay workshops, we incorporate large glass roll-up doors, open trusses, clerestory windows, skylights providing natural lighting that saves long-term energy costs. These features assist with instruction and serve as “a building that teaches” for our students in the architecture, engineering, and construction classes. Our new high-bay facilities have large open spaces to create safe working environments for our students.
The inspiration for the Academy evolved over the past 8 years as a dream of Jeff Wright, California Teacher of the Year, and Ken Allen, Academy Board member and Industry Partner. When California Technical Education Facilities funding became available, Jeff Wright, Dave Dabaco, and Julie Hisaka wrote the grant proposal that was awarded funding in 2007.
Parents and students seeking to enroll in the new Engineering and Construction Academy should contact Jeff Wright at 953-8955 or jwright@lusd.net or Dave Dabaco at 953-9570 or ddabaco@lusd.net.
