NUTRITION POLICY

In order to ensure that all students have access to nutritious foods throughout the day, the following procedures will be followed:

Maintain district control of all vending machines

  • All vending machines that are accessible to students will offer a variety of nutritious items which must comply with district nutrition standards.

Promote nutrition education and healthy food choices

  • The Child Nutrition Service program will work with all available resources to integrate nutrition education as part of the daily operations. Marketing and information related to nutrition and healthy eating habits will be provided to students as part of the daily food services program.
  • Healthy food and beverage items available in all food outlets on campuses will be promoted.

Exceptions

  • Student groups in the district may apply for and be allowed one sale per semester of up to three calendar weeks duration, offering one item that does not meet the LUSD Nutrition Guidelines.  No more than two clubs may offer noncompliant items at any time.  At no time may such sales include soda.
  • A school may apply to the LUSD Board of Trustees for a waiver of the Nutrition Guidelines for a special event.  Events must be related to the school or classroom curriculum.

Regulation

  • These regulations will become fully effective August 2004.
  • These regulations will be reviewed at the end of the fall semester to evaluate effectiveness.
