Parents' Guide to the Notebook

The purpose of this page is to show parents and guardians how to keep track of their student's progress in biology class. There will be times where grades are not entered into Aries or when some grades that are entered seem confusing. This page will help clarify things.
1.Once the web site is loaded, you will see some pictures, contact information and a calendar that will look similar to this:

You may have to scroll down to see all of the contents, but you should definitely be able to see
  • Biology Related Pictures
  • Teacher contact information
  • The current calendar
2.Before we go any further, EMAIL is the absolute best way to contact Mr. Flanigan
3.Let's take a closer look at the calendar

For each day of the week, you will see the TOPIC, DUE, and HW.
  • TOPIC: Sometimes you will see something here as a clickable download like this: . If you see it clickable, the students need to download, print and bring with them that material to class for that day. If it is not clickable, then no need to worry.
  • DUE: This is just what is due that day.
  • HW: Homework for the night. Often times, this will be clickable and load another page. The page that comes up will describe the homework for that night, including what page the assignment needs to go on in the notebook.
4.CURRENT TABLE OF CONTENTS...This is the biggest piece of information for you to keep track of your student!

Everything that we are currently doing is listed right here. In other words, if it is listed here, your student should have it in their notebook. This is where the proverbial rubber meets the road for you to keep track of the work of your student. Here are some things to keep in mind...
  • Stamps: A stamp on a page means that the page has already earned full credit (usually five out of five points). If there is no stamp, it means that there is something missing or directions were not followed. It is also important to note that all students can fix whatever they need to and still earn partial credit for that page (four out of five points). Below is a list of common assignments that you can use to check on your student (so you do not have to guess as to whether or not your student is telling you the truth about their homework)
  • Unit Cover: A picture (in color) of anything to do with our current unit of study. This assignment will not be stamped
  • TOC: This is simply our current table of contents. Your student should have hand written copy of everything you see under the current table of contents on the web site. This assignment will also not be stamped.
  • Notes: These are on the right hand pages of the notebook. Not only do the lecture notes need to be there, but there should also be:
    1. a column on the left hand side with at least FOUR questions (three questions or less and no stamp)
    2. a 25 to 35 word summary of the notes (straight facts, nothing like: "today in class we learned that...")
  • Labs Right Side: Needs to include all of the parts of the reference page (found in the beginning of the notebook): problem, hypothesis, procedure, units measured, etc.
  • Lab Left Side: Needs to include the data, a colored graph (labeled properly and having a proper title) and all five parts of the data analysis (again, see the reference pages of how to do this at the beginning of the notebook).
  • Diagrams: diagrams, graphs or pictures always need to be in color. The level of artwork is unimportant; trying their best, following directions and having it be in color is important.
  • OA: OA stands for Opening Activity. It is what the students do when they come in to class. The question should be written out completely and answered in completed sentences. If they have that, then they have earned an easy five points. Opening activities are NOT stamped. If a student is absent, they are still repsonsible for the OA. The OA will be posted on the web site at the end of the school day if there is one so students can make up the work.
  • OTHER: Obviously, there will be other assignments that do not fall into the above categories. However, if this is the case, chances are that there will be a clickable link under the HW heading for that day on the calendar, as well a clickable for that page under the current table of contents. The clickable will load a new page with a description of the assignment.
5.You should now be able to grade your student's notebook at any time. Unit Cover, TOC and OA's are not stamped. Everything else is. If has a stamp, then your student has earned five out of five for that page. If a student does not have a stamp, but, you checked that they fixed everything and they have now met the requirements, then your student earned four out of five on that page. If there is no stamp and the page is not fixed, or there is/are still a part or parts missing, then your student earned a zero out of five on that page.
6.A picture of the stamp that we are using for that unit will be posted at the bottom of the web site underneath the current table of contents.
7.If you every have a question about an assignment, how anything works or anything in general that may help your student in general, please email me as soon as possible.
